What work is being done by the World Cocoa Foundation
The World Cocoa
Foundation (WCF) has three main programs they have started to achieve throughout
the years. The first program is the WCF cocoa livelihoods program, the WCF is
working to double the income of approximately 200,000 smallholder,
cocoa-growing households in West and Central Africa. The three main objectives
are to improve market efficiency and to build capacity of farmers and the
farmers organisations, to improve production and the quality of cocoa and to
improve farmer’s competitiveness on diversified farms. This program is focused
more in the countries of Cameroon, Cote d’lvoire, Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria.

The second program is called The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology. The Fellowship Program supports the exchange of cocoa scientists from the Americas, Southeast Asia and Africa. The program sponsors science fellows to complete a two- to three-month research fellowship in the United States, acquiring skills and knowledge that can be shared broadly upon their return home. This program has three main objectives to build capacity of research institutes in cocoa-producing countries while the research support the modernization and competiveness of the cocoa sector, to improve researches understanding of the cocoa supply chain and finally to strengthen networks between U.S. and producing country research institutes.
Program accomplishment to date: To date, 20 fellows have completed their fellowships, an additional 20 fellowships will be awarded in 2016.
The third and final program is Building on World Cocoa Foundation member-supported pilot education. WCF Empowering Cocoa Households with Opportunities and Education Solutions (ECHOES) strengthens cocoa-growing communities by expanding opportunities for youth and young adults through education. WCF ECHOES serves as a scalable model for education in rural West Africa and currently supports 38 communities in the regions of Haut Sassandra, Moyen Comoé, Agnéby, Moyen Cavally Region, and Sud Bandama of Côte d’Ivoire, and 41 communities in the Western and Ashanti regions of Ghana.
